Proper feeding of aquarium fish is a guarantee of your normal development and health. Usually, fish are given as much food as they can eat in about 5-10 minutes. On average, fish are fed 1-2 times a day – that’s enough for most aquarium fish. If you ignore these recommendations, feeding fish can become very harmful as a result of water pollution with decomposing food residues. In this regard, it is necessary to remove food residues in order to minimize water pollution.
What to feed freshwater fish
The most correct way to feed freshwater fish is to keep different kinds in the same aquarium that eat the same food. The more varied the menu is, the more attractive the fish color becomes.
If we are forced to leave your house for a while, you need to choose someone from your relatives or friends to feed the fish in your absence, or install an automatic feeder in the aquarium, for example, TETRA my FEEDER.

Freshwater fish food types
Currently, there are many fish feed on the market. Briefly, we will try to describe their main types:
There is a large selection of flake food for fry and adult fish. Good choice to feed freshwater fish. Flake food can also be divided into vegetarian feed for herbivorous fish and compound feed for omnivorous freshwater fish. In shop you can get flakes with reinforced additives that improve the color of the body of the fish. It is advisable to feed fish with different types of Flake food. It should be noted that Flake food is a good addition to other feeds.
These are usually frozen meat products. Store them in the freezer. The main advantage of frozen feed for freshwater fish is that, unlike live food, you do not have to go to the store regularly.
These are mostly dried larvae of insects, crustaceans, and zooplankton. They are mainly available in powder form or as press cubes. The main advantage of this food is that despite the small amount of moisture, they are quite high in calories and, in addition, are comfortable to store for a long time.
It is considered the best food for fish, as it is the staple food for fish that live in nature. In trade, there are a variety of live foods: Tubifex, mosquito larvae, Daphnia, Artemia, and others. Before feeding fish live food, always check it for the presence of various parasites that can be accidentally brought into the aquarium, which can cause you various diseases.
Pellets and tables
They are primarily intended for fish with certain food preferences. Although these products are less diverse in their composition, they are in demand for many species of catfish, for example.
Living dust for fry
Very often in the description of certain fish living dust is given as recommendations for feeding newly hatched freshwater fish. Currently, various dry foods for roasts are widely used in the network of domestic pet shops. It seems that it might be easier-I bought one of these feeds, and the problem is solved, but in fact it is not so easy. Despite the fact that the description of dry food describes many of its positive properties, live food is still an order of magnitude better.
If you feed freshwater fry with dry food, it must be literally similar to dust so that the fry can swallow it. In addition, the food must be strictly dosed so that it is eaten within a short period of time, otherwise its excess pollutes the water severely. Feed dry food fry every 1.5-2 hours, which is not always possible. And how does it work with the live feeds? On the pages of our resource you can often read that the starter food for roasting is living dust. So, what is it?
Living dust is small microorganisms (infusoria). In fact, we currently know about 6000 varieties of protozoa, one of which is the slipper infusoria (Paramaecium caudatum).
Infusoria slipper belongs to unicellular microorganisms, its size is only about 0.2 mm. the cycle of reproduction of infusoria is about 24 hours. In the process of reproduction, the infusory shoe is divided into two parts. These infusoria can be stored all year round at a temperature of about 23-26°C in a suitable tank.
It is a variety of ways known to dilute infusions, for example, on the skin of bananas, hay, milk, etc., We will share with you another simple method for the cultivation of ciliates.
Choose a glass or plastic container with a volume of at least 3 liters and fill it with boiled water at room temperature. Drop 6-10 drops of milk into the water and place the peel of a banana in the water. Now the task is to get the infusoria. You can do this by asking your friends or buying it at the pet market (you only need a few drops). In extreme cases, you can simply take a little old water from the aquarium, which already has infusoria, although in small quantities. After that, the vessel is placed in a shady place and we wait for the beginning of the development of bacteria.
After a day, the water in the vessel becomes cloudy, which indicates that the process of bacterial development has begun. These are the bacteria that infusoria feed on. As we have already written above, infusoria are divided into two once a day, so that their number doubles every day. After 7-10 days, the water in the vessel becomes transparent and you will see many small white dots randomly floating in the water column – this is the slipper infusoria, which can be fed for frying.
Living dust for roasts – what is it
It is very convenient to feed living dust with a medical plastic syringe. Infusorium is sucked into it and then poured into the aquarium. Since the infusoria population in the vessel will decrease in order to replenish it, you need to add freshly boiled water and feed it regularly 1 time in 3 days by dropping 4-5 drops of milk into the water.
It should be noted that when feeding freshwater fish fry with live dust, the number of feedings can be reduced to 3 times a day.
