An important prerequisite for the normal development and reproduction of fish is proper nutrition. That’s why it is very important to know what do fish like to eat. Fish need live and dry food. It can be bought in pet stores. It is easy to prepare food yourself.
What do fish like to eat?
The most common and affordable food that can be extracted is Tubifex (representative of the annelid worm type). Their length is 5 to 50 mm or more, the color is from dark brown, pink to gray-white. Tubifex lives and breeds in small polluted reservoirs, streams, and sewers that do not freeze in winter. They gather on the sandy, bumpy ground. They burrow in whole colonies in the sand to a depth of 10 cm, they can be easily palpable by hand. To catch the Tubifex, you need a 400×500 mm net, made of nylon fabric with a 1-1. 5 mm cell, a plastic bag, or another container for the transport of dirty food. The net can be equipped with connecting rod tubes for collecting food from the shore. In the presence of a rubber suit, Tubifex is caught with their hands and groping for tight clusters of homes on the ground or plants. Worms are taken together with the soil and plants and shaken out of the stems via a net, which is lowered to half in the water.
The caught Tubifex is placed in a layer of no more than 3 cm in a wide shallow container, covered with a thin layer of clean sand, and carefully filled with water. In this form, they remain for the night. In the morning clean, without any specks worms accurately collected from the surface of the sand, put in a cuvette (shallow container), and pour cold boiled water around the edges, leaving most of the contents of the container in the air. At the latest four hours later, the food should be washed in a wide basin under running water so that it does not get a jet of water. This should not be done more than three times in a row. Avoid chlorinated water that is irritating and harmful to worms. The washed food is filtered with a net and put in the refrigerator. On the first day, it must be washed at least three times a day, on the second-morning and evening, on the third-only in the morning. The food can be fed to fish for four days. On the sixth day, the Tubifex are completely self-cleaning and can be kept in a small container in the refrigerator for several days without washing. Every time you wash the food, you have to throw the sediment and put boiled water on the edges of the trench. This technology of treatment of Tubifex significantly reduces the introduction of an infection from a natural reservoir into the aquarium.
Many Fishkeepers ask the question what do fish like to eat, finding that answer in Daphnia, lives in small reservoirs with running water, where there are enough organic nutrients. They are caught with a net with prefabricated tubes of at least 2.5-3.5 m length and 25-30 mm diameter. The net itself with a diameter of 200-300 mm and a depth of 500 mm is made of nylon fabric. The material is sewn in such a way that the downward tapering net has a niche the size of a palm tree for gathering food. The frame for the net should be round and voluminous. You need two types of F-nets: for very small feed-with a cell of 0.06-0.07 mm-dust, cloth, and for a larger-with a cell of 0.14-0.15 mm.
The first net holds the smallest feed in the form of” living dust”, the second leaves a larger feed. The sorting of food takes place at home, where a net with a cell of 0.07-0.08 mm is assigned to another group-feed “after dust”. Thus, the food is divided into three categories:” dust “/nauplius, rotifers, and tiny creatures/ for feeding roasts,” after dust ” – for growing young and Daphnia-for adult fish.
Trapped Daphnia is washed out of the net into relatively clean water from a natural reservoir /or into a well-established water supply/. In dirty water it is useless to transport Daphnia – half dies in half an hour, suffocated by lack of oxygen, it is best to put Daphnia without water in an open container or a damp rag and discharge it at home in a shallow container with separated and ventilated water. As practice has shown, most of the Daphnia is preserved. Sedentary, non-viable foods can be put in the freezer in the form of” cans”. This method captures the smallest organisms – “dust” is harvested for the winter or in case there are interruptions with food. But before you start to catch” dust ” in the reservoir, you need to find out if there is food in it, what it is alive or dead. To do this, you need to have a test tube with a diameter of about one centimeter. When the content calms down, look at the light, and choose a particular angle where you can see the piles of tiny dust particles better. If the suspension is stationary and has the form of broken threads or fabrics, it is assumed that this dust does not live and is not suitable for feeding fish. And this substance is a good answer to the question of what do fish like to eat.
Daphnia is replaced in winter by Copepods, which fishkeepers combine under the name “Cyclops”. Cyclops live all year round in clean reservoirs and forest pool lakes. The color of the crustaceans is very different-from Gray to red.
Cyclops are more resistant than Daphnia. If water is constantly changed in glass or enamel bowls, the food can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. Catch Cyclops just like Daphnia.
Do fish like to eat bloodworms? The cleanest and most necessary food is “Bloodworm” – larvae of insects, especially mosquitoes that live in the water. You can buy it on the market if you want to buy it yourself. Larvae live in non-flowing and low-flowing reservoirs with a muddy soil, where they develop to the pupal stage. The bloodworm feeds on algae. Pupated larvae swim in the water column and on the surface. Then, adult mosquitoes fly out of them.
Large bloodworms are feed to viviparous and predatory fish. Medium-sized and large cichlids easily eat pupae. Mosquitoes themselves are a good food source for fish that swim near the surface water /Dermogenys, Copella, Epiplatys, and others/.
To catch bloodworms, you need to have a bucket with a long rope and a sieve. The bucket is thrown to the bottom of the reservoir and then pulled up to the shore by a rope. Along with the mud and debris, the bloodworms also comes in.
The contents of the bucket are placed on a sieve and washed until large debris and moths remain in the sieve. To separate the larvae from the garbage, the contents are placed on a sieve with large holes, which is placed on a water basin so that it touches the water. The moth itself crawls through the hole into the water and reaches the bottom of the pool, where it is collected with a net.
Store the bloodworms in a damp cloth or paper and spread a thin layer. The top of the pack is wrapped in several layers of dry paper and put in a cool place. This food is not washed. It must be stirred regularly, after which it comes alive. Cloth/paper / should be rinsed or replaced every other day with fresh, moistened. If the moth is stored in a multi-layer package, the next layer of fabric /or paper / is removed as soon as it gets dirty.
Very comfortable food, especially for teenage fish – Artemia crustaceans, who live in reservoirs with a high concentration of salts. Artemia eggs can be found on the shore in the form of rollers on the sand. Store them in the refrigerator and, if necessary, take them off at home. To do this, three liters of water, preferably not sold / four tablespoons of cooking salt / “extra” is/, add one or two spoons of Artemia and throw a tablet of hydrogen peroxide /you can do without it, but the result is worse/, put an air pump and increase the temperature to 28°C. After 30-40 hours, the shellfish are removed. Catch them with a tube with a glass tip after placing the glass with Artemia closer to the light and waiting for them to accumulate in one place. Caught crustaceans are washed in a dust net with water and fed to fish.
To obtain a large yield of Artemia, you need to pour a glass of clean water into a liter jar, dissolve three tablespoons of salt in it, put Artemia in the porridge density, put it in the refrigerator, and put it in the freezer after a day. At the same time, it should be noted that the artemia does not freeze /it depends on the salt concentration, if necessary it can be added/. Then proceed with the technology described above. What do fish like to eat? Exactly this Artemia is considered very effective by some fishkeepers.
In addition to receiving Artemia at home, infusoria is bred for a small fish fry – the simplest unicellular organism. The glass is half filled with aquarium water, the same amount is added to the separated water, and the culture of infusoria introduced. For nutrition and reproduction shoes throw two or three small pieces of pumpkin, carrots, banana crusts. These products rot and secrete a large number of bacteria that feed on infusoria. Infusoria are fed with water in which they are divorced. You can also do this: filter the water through cotton wool, then rinse it in the spawning area with a roast.
There are several recipes for a combined feed of animal and plant origin. These chucks are useful when you need to achieve good spawning results: a variety of feeding promotes the active maturation of eggs.
Do fish like to eat self-made food? Yes, if you prepare it the right way. To prepare a combined food, you need to take fish fillet and beef liver in equal parts. Skip all several times through a meat grinder, add vitamin D / per 1 kg weight 60-70 pre-crushed peas/. Place the well-mixed minced meat in a thin layer on a flat surface in the freezer. Store in the form of briquettes. For many Predators-catfish, cichlids, parrotfish, most cichlids, you can recommend a mixture of raw beef /1 kg/, cooked/ only for cooking / shrimp / 300 g/, white fish fillet / 300 g / and squid /300 g/. All this can be replaced by a single pack of pasta “Ocean”. Then, in this mass, crush vitamin D / 50-70 tablets is 0.0125 mg/. All this is passed through a meat grinder, the mass is thoroughly mixed and frozen in a thin layer. This food is useful to give spawning pairs for future active spawning, and a good collection of eggs in the female abdomens.
From vegetable compound feed the following combinations can be named: water fern, Wolffia, filamentous algae / thoroughly washed, dried, crushed/. Dried green food is stored in closed jars.
You should know that each type of fish is adapted to a particular food. Some fish at an early age / dwarf gourami, Siamese fighting fish/ do not tolerate tubifex, prefer crustaceans branched and copepods.
Tropical fish are not afraid of overfeeding with Daphnia. And yet it is not desirable to oversaturate the aquarium with food: Daphnia take a large amount of oxygen, which is harmful to the inhabitants.
Goldfish without green food almost lose the ability to spawn. Common molly, Hemigrammus, Ancistrus, loricaria, and many others, constantly need to have a diet of green feed. Some fishkeepers scalded themselves in thinking about what do fish like to eat so they boil young cabbage leaves and let themselves be eaten by barbs and mollies. Other inhabitants of the aquarium do not reject such food.
During fasting, which must be arranged once /two to three days/ in two weeks, it is advisable to feed green food in any form. It is useful and well absorbed. Fasting days can only be done for adult fish for various purposes. For example, a young rasbora heteromorpha, obese and lost the ability to spawn, after prolonged Hunger restores vital functions.
Frozen combo food is given to fish after it has been previously crushed to the required size. For large fish, such as oscar fish, adult goldfish, it is cut into small cubes and slightly heated (but not until fully defrosted). Leftovers and uncooked pieces are immediately taken away until they disintegrate into tiny particles and water becomes cloudy. Frozen Daphnia gives cubes whose size is determined by the number of inhabitants. On the surface, the cubes melt and gradually drop the melting stream of Daphnia, which is immediately torn open by the fish. Additional food of this kind pollutes the water, so you should adapt to the appetite of fish.
Dry food is considered not the best answer to the question of what do fish like to eat. Anything that is not used by fish under natural conditions – Grain, Meat, egg yolk, oatmeal, but a good meal in aquarium practice is called additional food. The composition of the food depends on the tasks that the fishkeeper sets for himself, as well as on the types of aquarium inhabitants.
Feeding can be single or multiple, but in all cases, it can not be disturbed. Growing fry should be fed more often. Adult fish should not be overfed. An indicator of restriction can be the filling of your bellies, the intensity of appetite. Under the established regime, the need for food remains at a stable level. If you notice an appetite loss, it does not hurt to find out the cause. Perhaps the fish had a natural “discharge time” after constant abundant feeding, refusing to feed. There may be other reasons: aging of water /has not been replaced for a long time/, the appearance of gray mud, violation of biological balance, an excessive amount of food in the first stages of feeding, disease.
Recently born fry eats food slowly, for several hours /depending on the type/, the food standard for you is determined by the remains of the food at the time of next feeding. Adult healthy fish should eat 5-10 minutes, otherwise feeding should be considered a mistake. With the growth of fry, the food is increased. If the growth of individual fish is delayed, you must either sort or reduce the amount of food and cut with the scissors of the bloodworm or tubifex slightly smaller.
