Representatives of these fish form three families and about 600 species. It is characteristic that the back has two fins with front and rear soft rays. The body is elongated, oblong and the head is large compared to the body. The swim bladder is usually missing. Species from the bumblebee goby family have ventral fused fins, elongated bodies.
Bumblebee goby tank mates
Bumblebee goby is not suitable for general aquariums as they require brackish water and are territorial and can seriously drive fish in the lower layer.
It is ideal to keep them separate. And here is another paradox, although they are territorial, they must contain at least 6 pieces per aquarium.
The fact is that with this amount of aggression is evenly distributed, the fish also become brighter and show more natural behavior.
They like to eat shrimp, so is better not to include with cherries and other small shrimp.
Bumblebee goby (Brachygobius)
Fish live in brackish and freshwater, in natural water layers and are sedentary. Males are bigger than women. These fish live on the islands of Java, Sumatra, and Borneo. It can be the mouth of rivers, ditches, pits, rice fields. The salinity of water in such reservoirs is unstable, changes during the day, and depends on the season. In freshwater, these fish are rare.
Five fish species belong to the genus brachygobius. All have a long cylindrical body, a short head, and a soft but attractive color. The male is more brightly colored.
Currently, fishkeepers keep in the culture several species of goby fish from the genus brachygobius. They are all very similar to each other and only experienced fishkeepers can distinguish one species from another. Most often we have brachygobius xanthozona.
These fish in aquariums do not grow more than 3-4 cm. They have a typical shape for catfish. The body resembles an elongated drop, flattened from the sides, with a short head. The pelvic fins, like in most gobies, are fused. They form a sucker with which fish can be attached to any substrate.
The color of the fish, if properly maintained, is quite bright and attractive: on the golden yellow background of the body and the fins are velvet black transverse stripes. Between the second and third stripes, closer to the back, sometimes there is a dark spot. Under diseases and unfavorable conditions, the color fades, the dorsal fins are usually folded only when moving and partially straightened.
Fish lead a sedentary lifestyle. You can stand in one place for hours. Only occasionally the males begin to sort things between themselves and with other bumblebee goby tank mates, and then the aquarium becomes a little lively. But when food is brought into the aquarium, there is no trace of the former indifference. Fish move in dashes, hunting for food.
Does not recognize dry food just as a lot of bumblebee goby tank mates. Take a medium-sized Daphnia, Cyclops, small, cut fish. Food should be given frequently, but in small portions, because uneaten remains in saltwater quickly rot.
The water temperature can be varied widely: 18-38°C. the optimal temperature is 25-27°C.
Bumblebee goby Breeding
The breeding of tropical goby brachygobius is of interest to both beginners and experienced fishkeepers.
Secondary sexual characteristics in fish are poorly expressed. As a rule, females are slightly larger and fuller than males. And in the pre-spawning period, her belly is noticeably rounded with ripe caviar.
Fish can spawn in a common aquarium with other bumblebee goby tank mates near them, but it is better to deposit the particular pair in the spawning ground. They can serve as an aquarium with a base area of about 15x20 cm. Place at the bottom a ceramic pipe up to 10 cm long with an inner diameter of 3-4 cm, one or two bushes of Thai Fern.
A few producers are transferred to the spawning ground and the temperature is raised to 28-30°C. During this time, active ventilation of the water is necessary. Fish is fed two or three times a day in small portions. Food should be varied, the preferred small crustaceans, and later the Joker.
Spawning occurs on the third or fifth day. Brachygobius spawns most often in the morning. The female lays eggs on the upper part of the inner tube cavity. Eggs are whitish in color, teardrop-shaped, about 1 mm in diameter. Fish attach them to the substrate with narrow ends, and it seems that the eggs hang on strings. The number of eggs depends on the size of the producers and ranges from 50 to 150 pieces.
The female must be put away immediately after spawning, as the male takes care of the offspring. It should be noted that sometimes the male stops monitoring and even destroying the eggs for various reasons. In this case, the substrate with eggs is placed in an incubator or small vessel with water of the same composition and temperature as in the spawning ground. Near the substrate with caviar is installed a sprayer that provides ventilation and water flow. Good results are achieved by adding methylene blue to the water.
The hatching of larvae takes place on the fifth or sixth day and takes place unevenly. First, the larvae live at the expense of their egg bags, then they switch to the smallest living food – “dust“. Lack of suitable food causes the death of many fry; they do not tolerate even short-term Hunger.
Fry grow slowly, be careful of bumblebee goby tank mates because they can eat them. The size of the food should not be increased so quickly. At the age of a month, with an abundant diet, brachygobius grow up to 1 cm, and they begin to appear pigmentation. A month later, the fish acquire the behavior of their parents.
Bumblebee goby significantly different from others. For this species of fish, as well as for the whole family of goby, the peritoneal fins fused into the suction disc, fixed eyes and pectoral fins without muscle Rays are still characteristic.
The body of the fish is covered with yellow-black spots, which develop into an intense yellow color on the abdomen and gill covers. Males are brighter and larger than females, with large fins. They are particularly effective during the mating season when their fins are decorated with a white border with bright blue and black stripes. In addition to color changes during the spawning period, the male’s head deforms, Gill lids become inflated, green eyes become clearer and the mouth is wide open. The fish takes on an intimidating appearance that helps it to protect future offspring.
Breeding of beautiful-finned gobies
Spawning of these fish is a group, sometimes can be done with other bumblebee goby tank mates. The male has a “harem” of three or four females. He is the initiator of spawning: he prepares a nest in a grotto, in a rolled-up leaf of a plant, in a ceramic or chemically neutral tube to water, persistently cares for the females, and shows them his bright mating outfit in shades of blue, a kind of “dance” in turn lures the females to the nest where spawning takes place.
The female lays about 300 eggs. The clutch is actively protected by the male, even females are not allowed to nest after spawning. Sometimes, in the absence of the “father”, the female eats caviar. Therefore, it should be deposited after marking, and as soon as the larvae appear, the male can be returned to the female.
Caviar matures for 6-8 days at a temperature of 25-28°C. after another five days, the larvae begin to swim. Appetizer-infusoria, rotifer, nematodes.
Aquarium for bumblebee goby
This is a species aquarium. It is home to fish one of two species of tropical goby brachygobius.
It is relatively easy to keep brachygobius. A 10-liter aquarium is enough for a pair of fish. The water should be salted. You can use sea salt for this, but it is also suitable for eating. Salt is used at a rate of 1.5 tablespoons per 10 liters of water. At the same time, it should be noted that bumblebee goby don’t like freshwater, they do not tolerate a high content of nitrogen compounds in water. Therefore, in an aquarium with goby fish, it is desirable to have a filter with activated carbon. An air pump is mandatory.
Of aquarium plants in this water usually develops the Thai Fern. It can be used for aquarium decoration.
Brachygobius is territorial fish, so the aquarium must provide different types of protection for bumblebee goby tank mates. You can use ceramic and plastic pipes with a diameter of 3-5 cm, flower pots on the sides, terraces, small stones, etc.
The aquarium for beautiful swimming goby is slightly different from the previous one. Its capacity is 30-50 liters, the salinity of the water is 2-10%, the hardness is 10-15°, pH = 8.0, the temperature is 19 to 30°C.
